Name: Yuui / "Fai D. Flourite"
Fandom: Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle
Gender: Male
Age: It’s assumed that he’s hundreds of years old due to his magic slowing down the aging process but physically he’s 23
Time Period: Chapter 120 – right before clone Syaoran takes his eye
Wing Color: White with cerulean lining the tips
History: Wiki
Personality: A good way to start is by saying that Fai is a very complex person.
Outwardly, Fai is seen as a very bubbly, carefree, and optimistic person. He always wears a smile on his face, no matter the situation, and runs around teasing Kurogane while calling him strange nicknames. A good majority of the time it seems like he doesn’t have a care in the world. He takes a lot of things with a grain of salt. Insult him or threaten him and he’ll wave it off with a smile. However, on the inside, things are a bit more complicated.
Fai, aka Yuui, was born along with a twin brother in a world where they were both accused of causing great misfortune to fall upon their country because of their very existence. Their mother committed suicide in guilt of giving birth to them, crops failed to grow, water became undrinkable and the people grew unhappy themselves. It was called the curse of the unhappy twins. Both he and his brother were cast into a place where time did not exist and magic could not be used. The two were forced to suffer a great deal in the tower, Yuui being the one to suffer most as he even witnessed his king commit suicide, blaming the fall of their country on him and his brother. A choice was later made and his twin brother died, allowing Yuui to go to the world of Celes with King Ashura-o. After growing up in Celes under Ashura-o’s wing, the country experienced a catastrophe which happened to be caused by the king himself as he became a murderer.
“I don’t want to make anyone unhappy because of their involvement with me” – Fai
This twin’s curse is a giant weight on Fai’s mentality. Because he feels he caused the misfortune in his world and in Celes, he puts up a façade and even draws a line for himself to keep himself distant from other people. He believes that if he were to become too emotionally attached to a person, they would come to experience some kind of misfortune due to the curse of the unhappy twins and would grieve and become sorrowful themselves.
Fai is a liar. Simple as that. Almost everything that comes out of his mouth is a lie, and he’s good at making everything he says sound believable. It’s nearly impossible to catch him in his lies unless you’re good at seeing past the barrier he’s put up for himself. By lying, he believes that he is keeping other’s happy and protecting them from himself by remaining distant. If he’s been seen through, he will try to act innocent or quickly find a distraction to keep the focus off of him.
However, there are times when he unconsciously crosses his own line and allows himself to become emotionally attached to people, more specifically to Kurogane, Sakura, and Syaoran. His relationship with them is special in a way. As unintentional as it is and as unaware of it as he is (until later chapters), he will willingly throw himself into harm’s way, especially for Sakura, and will even go as far as using his own magic to protect them. Later in the manga, he points out that he first crossed the line when he gave Kurogane a nickname and progressively allowed himself and them to become so close that they wanted him to live despite his own desire not to.
Which comes down to another thing. Fai lacks the will to live. Kurogane points it out after a fight against oni in the country of Oto: “The ones I hate most in the world are the guys who still have lives to live but they don’t make any effort to live them.” With Fai’s reply simply being: “Then my type is the type you hate most.” Not to say that Fai is suicidal, because he isn’t. But when it comes down to fighting for his own life, he doesn’t fight with much vigor. He will willingly die without putting up too much of a fight unless he’s fighting for someone he deeply cares about.
“Your smile, Fai, has done much to heal my heart. That is a kind of magic as well.” – King Ashura-o to Fai
Fai is a man who is unable to cure even the most simplest of illnesses, despite his immense power. When he was a child, after being brought to the world of Celes by King Ashura-o, he found it to be nearly impossible for him to master healing spells. But he quickly discovered and was even told that his smile alone brought joy to the people around him and acted as a sort of healing magic. Hence why he continuously acts so carefree and goofy and always puts on a smile. It’s his own way of keeping the spirits of those around him up and keeps them from worrying about him. Even if he isn’t happy himself, he’ll continue to smile anyways.
An unhappy twin is what Fai is indeed. Guilt is a burden he constantly carries on his shoulders; in fact, it even shows in his very name. “Fai” is not his real name and is in fact the name of his twin brother whom he thinks he killed. As a child, during his time trapped in the tower, he was greeted by a man and given a choice that either he or his brother could leave the tower, but one had to be sacrificed. While what he believes what happened back then is wrong he believes he chose his brother to be sacrificed for his sake. Feeling nothing but guilt for murdering his own brother so selfishly, he lied when giving King Ashura-o his name, telling him his name is “Fai” rather than “Yuui”, so in a sense, his brother could continue to live on.
Fai has a dream. This dream of his is to bring his brother back to life. As much of an impossible dream as it is, he will do anything he has to, even vowing as a child that he would kill with his bare hands if he had to in order to make it come true. And it’s still something he’s willing to do. If anyone attempts to step in his way or stop the progression he will find a way to work around them and move forward or fight against them if he has to.
While his energetic and bubbly attitude may be misleading, Fai is very observant and smart. He is easily able to detect and find abnormalities in his surroundings or the people around him. The same close observance especially goes for the use of magic as well. While Fai doesn’t use magic himself very often, if at all, he is familiar with and has practiced multiple types of magic and can detect where magic is or has been used, even if it isn’t obvious to the naked eye. Much like he had in the world of Lecourt when he found a magic wall and knew how to get rid of it properly.
Strengths:
Physical: Fai has fast reflexes and is quick on his feet. He can dodge the blade of a sword without putting up so much as an effort. In fact, a lot of the time he treats it like child’s play, like when he was put up against Kurogane in a fight and merely put his hands up, laughing and moving with ease to dodge each attack.
He is also capable of wielding and using a wide variety of weapons, ranging from a staff to a bow and arrow to just plain old darts.
Magic: In the world of Celes, Fai is marked as a ‘D’ rank magician, which is the highest rank anyone can possibly get. His magic surpasses that of any ordinary magician, even King Ashura-o, by quite a bit considering he is capable of teleporting from dimension to dimension more than once (which is the max limit for how many times an ordinary magician can do that). As a ‘D’ rank magician, it’s also a must to say that his magic is strong whenever he casts any spell. Like when he first helped the citizens of Celes as a child, he managed to dispel a storm by himself and in the world of Lecourt he whistled a form of magic which created a barrier that allowed them to use teleporting magic in a place where they could not.
Mental/Emotional: Though he doesn’t look it, Fai is as keen as someone can get. He’s very observant and can notice even the smallest abnormalities, magic or not, that seem hardly noticeable to another person. A good example of this was when he was in the Idol world and took notice of how it was strange how the creatures wore fur coats in a tropical type environment.
Fai is especially knowledgeable in the area of magic. Though it’s unknown how much time he spent in Celes growing up, he studied and worked under King Ashura-o who helped to teach him multiple forms of magic and spells. He can easily detect who possesses magic, what kind of magic is being used (offensive or defensive), what form of magic is being used, how exactly it’s being used and what it’s being used against.
Weaknesses:
Physical: The source of Fai’s magic comes from his eyes. Gouging out even just one eye would automatically cut his magic in half. Taking both eyes wound render him powerless. Unfortunately, it’s just that easy.
While Fai may be quick on his feet and can easily dodge attacks, he isn’t incredibly strong. In fact, he relies more on his dodging and observant abilities more-so than his own strength. He could easily be punched or kicked back and knocked down if he wasn’t putting up much of a fight or just wasn’t paying attention. Much like the time clone Syaoran simply kicked him to knock him down and take his eye from him.
Magic: As it’s said multiple times throughout the Celes arc, Fai’s magic supposedly becomes greater the more he uses it, but in actuality, it slowly kills him the more he uses it.
He is also bad at using healing magic. When he was younger he found it difficult to master any kind of healing spell and therefore cannot cure even the simplest of illnesses.
Mental/Emotional: Fai is bound by two curses. One of the curses is that if he were to ever meet someone with magic greater than his own, he has to kill them, no matter who they may be. He can’t fight this curse either nor can it ever be broken since it’s too strong. The only way to get rid of the curse is to kill the person with magical power greater than his.
His second curse (although it doesn’t really do anything to him when he’s in Luceti since the curse only activates in Celes I thought it was worth noting) activates when he returns to Celes. Before he can leave the world of Celes after reentering it, Fai’s magic will create a cage to prevent him or anyone else from leaving as the world itself is destroyed.
Fai is mentally scarred. The tragedies that happened in both the worlds of Valeria and Celes made him more aware of the curse of the unhappy twins and therefore he refuses to become too closely attached to people in fear that they may come to experience the same fate as those he once held dear. So he remains emotionally distant, putting up a façade to keep others from getting too close. He also refuses to involve himself too deeply with others if he can help it.
Despite how he refuses to become close to people, Kurogane, Syaoran and Sakura are all people Fai has come to be protective of. They are between a weakness and a strength for him, but mentally, they almost appear to be a weakness. He will do anything he must to protect them, despite the line he’s placed down for himself and will even go as far as throwing himself in harm’s way and using his magic for their sake. At times, it makes him mentally unsure of his own actions.
Fai lacks the will to live. Not in the sense that he’s suicidal, rather that he simply takes his life for granted. When fighting for himself, he won’t put up too much of a fight and will almost willingly allow himself to get hurt. Like in the country of Outo when he made no attempt to fight back or run when he ran out of weapons and an oni was about to attack him.

First Person: Ah! I think I got this thing to finally work! [Fai cheers happily to himself] What an interesting little book this is. I’ve never seen a book that could work as a sort of communication device. Hyuu~ [He can only hope Kurogane is listening for him and the others]
Now, this place is called Luceti, correct? I’ve been listening to so many of you talk to one another and I was able to get some information down. My apologies for the eavesdropping.
Oh! I’d like to ask if anyone has seen four of my traveling companions. One of them is a young lady named Sakura-chan, she’s the most adorable little thing with jade eyes and brown hair. Another is Syaoran-kun. [He pauses briefly. Which Syaoran would be the one to come here…? Would they both have been brought here? Hm… ] He has brown hair and amber eyes. Then there’s Mokona, he’s… well! I’m not quite sure what exactly he is but he’s a white little creature with long ears and a red gem on the middle of his forehead.
My last companion is named Big puppy! [Yes let’s embed that name into the people’s minds.] He’s a tall man with spiky black hair and red eyes. If you’ve seen any of them, please tell me. It’s important that we regroup.
Third Person: It had been a week since Fai arrived in Luceti. Adjusting to this world hadn’t come as a problem to him, just like with the several other worlds he had been to. But it was the fact he had nothing to do or keep him entertained that was bothersome. So he took a walk. And before he knew it, it found himself at the local bar. Seventh Heaven, was it? It was different, less atmospheric than the one he had gone to in the world of Oto, “Clover”. But he didn’t mind. It was as good as any. His chin rested in his hand, smiling gently as he stared at the clear liquid in his glass which he held up with his free hand.
It almost bothered him to a point, to be away from Sakura, Syaoran and Kurogane. Although he had been told about time stopping back in the world he came from while he was here, it made him uncertain and worry. The events prior to him coming here were dire. Syaoran’s soul—or what was left of the soul he had created on his own and with the others had left him and he turned on Fai for the magic that dwelled within his eye. Sakura’s sleeping soul remained under the water and Kurogane was nowhere to be found.
The thought to use his magic to teleport himself to their dimension crossed his mind but he quickly quelled the idea.
It was too risky. Considering what he had been told about the past attempts to leave just the barrier alone and the power cap that was placed over them, he knew he would no doubt just be wasting his magic and bringing himself closer to a death he did not want quite yet.
He took a drink.
Ah.
It really was a shame to be away from Kurogane and the others for this too. He could always find entertainment in them when they drank together. At least more than usual. Now he could only sit without a tingle of a buzz, an angry man shouting at them to sleep or a meow in his ear.
“Another glass, if you would please!” He lifted up his glass with a cheery, unwavering smile. At least the liquor here is good.
